They are combined with her outstanding storytelling skills and result in six excellent essays exploring memory and the connections between the past and the present, which are, as she says, in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”
Polley speaks about the fallibility of memory, and how the image of reality evolves in our minds. She gives stories from her own life as examples, including the struggle with the aftermath of a concussion.
The Younger Wife by Sally Hepworth
One of the best new books about to be published this spring is also a thriller entitled The Younger Wife. It tells the story of Rachel and Tully who are shocked to hear that their father plans to divorce their mother who is suffering from dementia, and marry a woman who is younger than both of them.
They decide to explore Heather’s secrets more and face their own problems, and hearing comments from their mother, they start to think their parents’ relationship may not have been as happy as it seemed to be. In this story, you can feel like an amateur detective who needs to judge the honesty of each narrator to guess who is guilty. Sounds really exciting!
Like a Sister by Kellye Garrett
Here’s another mystery novel on our spring 2022 reading list – Like a Sister by Kellye Garrett. This story starts with discovering the body of a Black reality TV star Desiree Pierce on a playground in the Bronx, the morning after her 25th birthday. The police and media quickly announce that her death was caused by an overdose.
However, her half-sister Lena doesn’t believe these statements. Despite the sad fact that they haven’t contacted each other for two years, she is sure Desiree couldn’t have done this. Also, she is certain she wouldn’t ever travel above 125th Street. Nobody wants to listen to her, but she decides to try to find justice for her half-sister on her own, even though it includes discovering her family’s deepest secrets and risking her life.
Time Zone J by Julie Doucet
Julie Doucet is famous for her funny, dirty, intimate alt-comics in both French and English. Her stories have always been full of sight gags, hysterical boyfriends, weird strangers, sex dreams, and more. After having quite a break from comics, Julie is coming back with her new release Time Zone J, a semi-tragic psychedelic comic.
It is a story of her passionate romance with a troubled guy from Paris in the late 80s. It is full of black-pen renderings of her present middle-aged self, her observations, some doodles, and random advertisements. Reading a comic book created in such an original style can be a really interesting experience!
Let’s Not Do That Again by Grant Ginder
A new novel from the author of The People We Hate at the Wedding – funny and absorbing book about politics, family, and things we are able to do to save our children. It is the story of Nancy Harriman, a politician running for the Senate, who is doing her utmost to win the elections. Despite passing all the right legislation and saying all the right things, she has a major problem – her adult children, Nick and Greta.
Greta is smart and pretty, but absolutely unmotivated by anything. She works at the Apple store and lets her life just pass her by. Nick, whose heart has been recently broken, is trying to write a musical about the life of Joan Didion.
One morning, it turns out Greta is making the headlines as she joined extremist protests in Paris. Nancy, along with Nick, has to do everything to save her daughter, as well as her campaign. The story shows that family, just like democracy, can be fragile and messy.
