To Paradise, Hanya Yanagihara

This book was released in January, so it’s already available to purchase. And many already did that with immense joy. To Paradise is the third book of Yanagihara – an author that draws a very thin line between pleasure and pain when it comes to the reader’s experience.

To Paradise is split into three parts. Every part takes place during different time periods (1893, 1993 and 2093). In every part, we meet new characters that interestingly are linked with each other by their names and the place they live in. Davids, Edwards, and Charles (and one Charlie) are connected through time and their choices.

Book presents questions about humanity, loneliness and fears that we all share as humans. It’s definitely worth a read.

How High We Go in the Dark, Sequoia Nagamatsu

If you’re looking for something in the realm of science fiction with an eerily relevant undertone, How High We Go in the Dark is a perfect title for you. Although the stories presented in the book seem to be full of the hopeless search for meaning in the world, where a global pandemic changed the rules forever (sounds familiar?), it’s really full of hope for humanity.

This book depicts stories of a grieving archaeologist, a desperate mother trying to hold on to her son’s life, a talking pig and scientist who find the family within each other, and a widowed painter who sets off with her granddaughter on the search for a new home for the world.

Each story is different, but each one of them surprises the reader with imaginative versions of the world we can somehow recognize and relate to.

Vladimir, Julia May Jonas

Vladimir is definitely for readers with a penchant for darker vibes, with art, academia, sex and lust being the main themes of Julia May Jonas’s debut novel. Beneath all of that, though, there’s a woman who’s looking for a bit of danger in life and is trying to face the consequences of the passage of time and how it impacts her womanhood.

In this book, you’ll find every element that makes a story great. Dark secrets that come alive, desires that wish to be fulfilled and characters that are charismatic and complex from the very first page. This story of a professor whose husband is caught in a scandal and encounters the mysterious Vladimir Vladinski on her path is a walking promise of a good time.

Violets, Alex Hyde

Another book on our list with names in the title, this time with two women at the centre of the story, both mothers and both named Violet. That’s not the only thing that connects them – they are both living in challenging times in the final breaths of WWII.

This novel from an up-and-coming British writer, Alex Hyde, is a beautiful and raw depiction of motherhood, loss and courage. Where fiction intertwines with poetry, and the world, although cruel and challenging, is a scene for something really special. Daring, innovative, and unusual – this is what best describes this book.

Bless The Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head, Warsan Shire

Warsan Shire is a poet that needs no introduction in the literature circles. If you aren’t familiar with her poetry, you might be surprised by the fact that her poems featured in Beyoncé’s highly critically acclaimed visual album Lemonade. Shire is a young and transformative voice of the Black community, and now she’s coming out with yet another anticipated book of poems.

Bless The Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head will premiere in March. Her poems touch on topics of trauma, womanhood and migration.
